The complete hard tonneau cover buying guide
New to truck bed covers? This guide covers what a hard tonneau cover is, the styles and materials, how to measure your bed, whether a cover helps gas mileage, and how install and care work. If you already know what you want, pick your truck at the top of the page.
1. What is a hard tonneau cover?
A hard tonneau cover is a rigid truck bed cover, made from materials like aluminum or fiberglass, that secures to the bed and helps keep cargo protected from weather while giving you full-bed or near-full-bed access. Worksport builds premium tri-fold and flip-up hard covers for many popular trucks.
2. The styles of hard tonneau covers
Hard Folding: More secure, usually tri-fold. Worksport builds tri-fold and flip-up hard covers.
Hard Rolling: Combines soft roll-up flexibility with metal security.
Retractable: Premium, sleek, often electric.
One-Piece Lids: Paint-matchable, stylish, but bulky and less flexible.
Heavy-Duty/Specialty: Built for work, with high weight ratings and rack compatibility.
3. Hard vs. soft tonneau covers
Hard covers are built for security and long-term durability. Thick panels do not flex or rattle and make it harder for anyone to get into your bed without permission.
Soft covers offer a lighter, lower-cost entry point. They fold out of the way quickly when you need full bed access and are a solid fit for owners who do not need maximum security.
4. What are Worksport hard covers made of?
AL3, HD3, AL4, and NEXUS use extra-strong aluminum panels made with an aluminum finish designed to protect cargo while supporting substantial evenly distributed weight. Every panel carries Worksport's durable, scratch- and UV-resistant DiamondSHIELD finish for a bold, head-turning look.
SOLIS uses an aircraft-grade aluminum extruded frame, die-cast aluminum hinges, and reinforced end caps for exceptional strength and durability while integrating solar cells into the cover.
Worksport hard folding covers are built to last and complement the look of your truck. Replacement parts are available for common wear items such as seals, clamps, and latches.
5. What makes SOLIS different?
SOLIS is the world's first solar folding truck bed cover: a purpose-built, high-efficiency solar array integrated into a custom-fit hard folding cover engineered for your specific truck's bed geometry.
Depending on bed size, SOLIS can generate up to 300W, 380W, 480W, or 600W under ideal conditions. Its standard MC4 connectivity makes it compatible with COR and other compatible solar-ready power stations.
Usually yes, modestly. By smoothing airflow over the bed, a tonneau cover can reduce aerodynamic drag at highway speed, which may improve fuel economy a few percent. The exact gain depends on your truck, speed, and driving conditions.
7. Which cover is right for you?
Tri-fold or flip-up? Tri-fold offers the lowest profile and partial bed access; flip-up offers full-bed access.
Want built-in power and protection? SOLIS is a hard folding cover with built-in solar arrays that generate clean power while keeping cargo protected.
Hard or soft? Hard provides durability, better security, and weather protection. Choose soft for lower price, lighter weight, and easy installation/removal.
8. How to measure your truck bed for a tonneau cover?
Tonneau covers are sized to your bed, so measuring is the step that tells you which cover fits.
Step 1: Clear the bed so nothing is in the way and make sure the tailgate is fully closed.
Step 2: Measure in a straight line from the inside edge of the closed tailgate to the inside of the bulkhead.
Step 3: Compare your measurement to the available product and vehicle guide. Make, model, and trim also matter.
